1 in 6 teens in NC say they have taken a medication prescribed to a friend or family member, and the majority of these were taken without the person’s permission.
What you can do as a parent:
1. Talk to your friends, family and most importantly, your children about the dangers of prescription drug misuse. Contact drugfree.org for a parent toolkit on how to talk to your children.
2. Properly dispose of unused medication
3. Count and secure your medication
The Lock Your Meds Campaign, provided by NC DHHS and RHA Prevention Resource Centers, has free lockboxes available for families who want to lock up medications. Please contact your child’s school for more information.
EGMS will have medicine lockboxes and further information, if requested, at a later time. Please message Nurse Sharon through dojo or call the office at 828-652-3730 to have your name put on the list.
