MCS Move to Remote Learning (12/14/2020 - 12/18/2020)

The COVID-19 data for our community continues to show a disturbing trend. For a second straight week, the county is looking at a record number of positives. This community spread increase is impacting the number of positives and isolations we are seeing in our schools, with one of the main issues at this time being our ability to adequately staff our campuses for safe and effective operations. As a result, we are making the difficult decision to transition students to remote learning next week, December 14 through December 18. Like the great Kenny Rogers advises, "You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em", and we are trying to find the right balance for the benefit of all.

Please make note of the following items for clarification:

-Remote learning for all MCS, with the exception of those high school students scheduled to take an EOC or CTE state exam.  The state requires these exams to be taken face to face, so MAI, MEC, or MHS students will report to school on their scheduled testing dates if they currently have English 2, Math 1, Math 3, Biology, or a CTE state exam. Buses will be running.

-It will be a regularly scheduled school week with student participation expected.  The instructional hours will count toward the total required for the year by the state.  Friday will remain an early release day per the calendar. Staff are to report to work as normal for the week.

-The grab and go meals will be available at our eight elementary school sites from 11:00-12:15 next Monday through Friday.

-Athletics will continue as scheduled.

-Your student's school will provide a follow up call with more specific information for your family

We appreciate the community support and understanding as we navigate school during a pandemic. MCS is planning to return to face to face instruction after Christmas Break. Until then, we will continue to monitor COVID-19 numbers in order to make the best decisions for students and staff. Further communication will come your way should the second semester schedule change. Such a communication will come directly from my office and not via the social media world.

On behalf of the Board of Education and all of McDowell County Schools, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Thank you.
