Become a Volunteer

Background checks for volunteers are monitored for 3 years.  If you have completed a background check after July 1, 2022, another background check is not due until 3 years from the date you completed it.  One background check covers all schools in the McDowell County School district.  If you have questions about your background check, please contact the principal at the school for which you are volunteering.  Also, employees of MCS do not have to complete a volunteer background check.

Individuals who are interested in volunteering must have a criminal background completed and approved before volunteering is allowed.

Who is required to complete a Volunteer Background Check Form?

  • Adults (age 18 years of age or older, minimum of 21 years of age to chaperon field trips) who, with school district approval, assist teachers, administrators, or other staff in the classrooms, schools, or district programs and activities and who do not receive compensation for their work.  The district will conduct a state and national criminal records check on all volunteers who have contact with students on a regularly scheduled and/or continuing basis and/or have supervisory responsibility for students at the school site or on school-sponsored trips.  Volunteers at the school will follow the rules, regulations, policies and procedures established by the Board of Education and the Superintendent.  Persons convicted of or pleading guilty to drug offenses within the past seven years; sexual offenses; offenses against minors; deadly weapon offenses; violent, abusive, threatening or harassment offences; or any felony offense will not be used as a volunteer.

Have you completed the Volunteer Background Check since July 1, 2022?  If yes, please do not complete the form again.
