YMCA After School at McDowell County Schools

McDowell County Schools partners with the YMCA of Western North Carolina to provide childcare for local elementary school students.

As we reopen with a hybrid of in-person and remote learning, the Y has enhanced its childcare programs to meet the needs of working parents. In addition to afterschool care at onsite MCS locations in Plan B, the Y will offer full-day care at the Corpening Memorial YMCA on any day that MCS is in plan B or C.

YMCA childcare helps families make sure their kids get extra support, ongoing learning, and a chance to be a part of meaningful activities that can inspire and motivate them to succeed in school and life. Benefits include tutoring, homework help, individualized attention, healthy snacks, and outdoor play.

To help meet educational challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Y’s full-day virtual instruction programs will complement and enrich the learning experience.

The Y’s qualified and caring staff will work closely with students on their daily virtual classwork to support their academic goals. They will also continue to operate with thorough health safeguards to keep children and staff safe.

Eligible Students

McDowell County students enrolled in grades K-5 at Eastfield, Glenwood, Marion, Nebo, North Cove, Old Fort, Pleasant Gardens, and West Marion elementary schools are eligible for YMCA childcare.

Options

Full-day care begins on Monday, Aug. 17 at the Corpening Memorial YMCA and will be offered on any day that MCS is in plan B or C.

YMCA afterschool care will begin on Monday, Aug. 24 during Plan B at onsite school locations.

Families can sign up for afterschool care, full-day care, or both.

Hours of Operation

YMCA afterschool care runs from the time school is dismissed until 6 p.m.

Full-day care starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 5:30 p.m. Due to the increased need for set up and cleaning during Plan B and C, we are unable to extend hours for full-day care.

Rates

The standard rates for afterschool are $95/week per child and $200/week per child for full-day care. Thanks to generous grants and donations, the discounted rate for McDowell County students is $73.15 for afterschool and $154 for full-day care.

All students are considered for financial assistance to help offset the price of childcare. Thanks to the generous support of the Corpening Memorial Foundation, community donors, and a grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Foundation, the Y has scholarships available for any child registering for the McDowell County childcare programs.

No additional registration fee will be charged if your child is already registered for a Y afterschool program.

The YMCA's Afterschool Program is licensed through the North Carolina Division of Child Development and Early Education and accepts state subsidy vouchers.
