Learning Management System

What is a Learning Management System?

A learning management system (LMS) is a software application or software as a service the gives instructors a central place to house, create and deliver content; monitor learner participation; and assess learner performance.  A LMS is not limited to teacher/student classroom. Professional Development can also be housed in a LMS.

McDowell County Schools officially supports Canvas (6-12) and Google Classroom (K-5)

Canvas (6th-12th grades)

Canvas is an easy-to-use, cloud-based learning management system that connects all the digital tools and resources teachers use into one simple place. It integrates seamlessly with hundreds of apps, empowering teachers and students with countless tools to make teaching and learning easier and more fun.  Canvas also works in blended learning, because of its rich feature set. All 6th-12th grade students and teachers are provided a Canvas account.

Google Classroom (K-5)

Google Classroom is a blended learning platform for schools that aims to simplify creating, distributing and grading assignments in a paperless way. Blended learning is a formal education program in which a student learns at least in part through delivery of content and instruction via digital and online media with some element of student control over time, place, path, or pace.  Google Classroom works best when teachers and students share face-to-face class time. If you have never used an LMS, we recommend starting with Google Classroom.  All K-5 students and teachers are provided Google Classroom access.
